An Ode to a Retired Unofficial Mascot

Hear ye! Hear ye! Harken unto my writing!
This week a great tragedy has befallen us!
For Vili the Warrior has exiled himself from the college world.

Why has this great Warrior left the stands?
Why has the noble Vili hung up his grass skirt?
Alas, the scribe noted officially that he left to support his kin.

Vili's history, though not inscribed in the sands of time,
Started with the hiring of June Jones in 1999.
His intensity struck fear into the hearts of opponents,
while to his friends, the element of ohana was always present.

Beating the drum and screaming at mascots,
always gave the Tongan an intense impression.
Suing EA Sports for using his likeness without permission,
showed that the entertainer had steely balls.

We will miss the haka!
We will miss the drum pounding vigilante of the stands.
We will most certainly hope that the Warriors,
get an official mascot as badass as Vili.

Morning Links 7/18/12

Being gone for a week plus makes updating news difficult.  So what has been cooking over the last week?  Let's find out.

From 7/5, UC Davis hires Terrance J. Tumey as new Athletic Director
This is a football move, make no doubt about it.  Tumey was a coach for UCLA and the Denver Broncos before working in the 49er front office.  How does this change UCD's potential vote for BSU in September?  My guess is that Tumey might want to throw a couple of Div-IAA games for the new members as part of the deal (which might not be so bad considering Coach Chris Petersen of BSU played QB at UCD and was a coach there as well).

Hawaii to play in the College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon
WWL chose a nice 4 am EST slot for the Warriors to play basketball (which is 10 pm Hawaii Time) against Houston Baptist.  So if you're a fanatic, watch live! Otherwise, TiVo it and save it to the morning.

Fox Soccer Channel loves the Big West, ergo it will show three games this season
LBSU women will travel to the ESSEEESEE to face Texas A&M at College Station on September 7th, 5 pm PST, while the UCSB men's team will get two of their games shown both at home: against UCLA on September 21st, 7 pm PST and against Cal Poly on October 19, 8 pm PST.  For those of us who obsessively watch college football and are worried about missing WACtion or MACtion on those Friday nights (so probably only me)...RECORD NON-CONFERENCE GAMES FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR PRIDE, PEOPLE!

Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine release their 12-13 schedule
All the basketball!  Looks like it's an 18-game conference schedule for those of you actually keeping track.

See anything I missed or something you find interesting? Let me know!

ALOHA, Bitches...Hawaii says hello officially.

12 AM, JULY 1, 2012: We here at the Big West Confidential want to officially give a warm, heartfelt welcome to the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.  We sincerely hope that there will be more epic 70's style logos and wordmark in the Big West and the Warriors, though with that Under Armour contract, probably not.

April Fool joke that happened a few months ago from the Big West...or was it?

Oh well, wishful thinking. And therefore, to celebrate this auspicious moment in Big West history, we're temporarily changing our logo also to resemble the epicness of former and current Hawaii logos.

So say Aloha to the newest official member of the Big West, The University of Hawaii.  Put on those hula skirts and crank that Pepper CD (or IZ, or other famous Hawaiian musicians), we're swimming with the humuhumunukunukuapua'a!  Give a hibiscus to your special Wahine or Kane for this great day.

The University of Hawaii is back!
