Big West Tennis Update 3/1/12

Tennis is an interesting sport in how it's ranked.  The main governing body of college tennis is the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (or ITA).  They do a top 75 ranking for Division I schools and individual rankings, which is different from RPI or Coaches' Poll.  That being said, lets give our BWC tennis teams some love:

Note: you can read all the information more in-depth here.

In the Women's standings, LBSU and UCSB stand undefeated in conference play, followed by Northridge, Cal Poly, UCD, Pacific, UCI, Fullerton and UCR.

Julia Hansen of Pacific was named conference POW for her comeback sets to win her matches against UCSB and Cal Poly.

3 Big West teams are ranked in the top 75: No 53 UCI, No 61 LBSU and No 69 CSU-N

This weekend holds some big matchups.  On Friday, SDSU takes on the 49ers and the Highlanders travel up the I5 to highway 99 to take on Cal State Bakersfield.  On Saturday, Northridge travels to Bakersfield for non-conference action while Cal Poly vs Fullerton, UCD vs LBSU and UCSB vs UCI round out Saturday's conference matches.  Finally on Sunday, conference play continues with UCD driving inland to UCR, Cal Poly driving west to square off against UCI and non-conference matches continue with Southern Utah playing the Titans, Northridge playing Fresno State and Pacific plays USF.

In the Men's standings, UCSB stands alone at the top, followed by Cal Poly, Pacific, UCR, UCI and UCD (LBSU, Northridge and Fullerton do not have men's tennis or are not a part of the BWC).

Fabian Matthews was named BWC POW for winning 3 of 4 of his singles matches including one against No. 15 ranked player: Washington's Kyle McMorrow.

Only 2 teams are ranked in the top 75: No 50 UCSB and No 53 Cal Poly.  However there are 2 players individually ranked in the top 75 individual rankings: No 25 Andre Dome and No 73 Fabian Matthews.

This weekend has a ranked showdown between UCSB and Cal Poly on Saturday.  Outside of that, on Friday,  Santa Clara plays UCI and on Saturday, UCD plays St. Mary's and Pacific travels to Reno to take on Nevada.  Finally on Sunday, Santa Clara travels back up the coast to play UCSB and USF travels to UCD.

Safe travels and good luck!
