Week 11 Preview: Men's Soccer

The other previews and recaps will come later tonight, but due to time constraints, I wanted to get this done quickly.

We are now in the last week of the regular season for Men's Soccer and half the playoff teams are set.  Cal State Northridge has clinched the South and UC Davis just needs to not lose to make playoffs.  As of right now, only UCI is officially out of the running for playoffs.  There are multiple scenarios that need to happen for teams to make playoffs:

NORTH:
UC Davis: just don't lose
Sacramento State: win or draw their next two matches (H vs UCSB, A at UCD)
Cal Poly: win their next two matches (A at UCD, H vs UCSB*), win and a draw and Sac State must lose twice
UCSB: must win twice (A at Sac State, A at Cal Poly*) and hope Cal Poly and Sac State lose twice

SOUTH
Cal State Fullerton: win once
UCR: win twice (A at UCI, A at Fullerton) and hope Fullerton loses or draws the first game

Today, UCSB travels to the state capital to play Sacramento State early, as does Cal Poly who travels to UC Davis.  Then later this evening, Northridge and Fullerton duke it out, while UCI looks to play spoiler against a hopeful UCR team.  Finally, on Sunday: Sac State and UCD renew their rivalry for the second time this season, UCI and Northridge play an essentially meaningless game, UCR and Fullerton fight for the South's final position (assuming UCR beats UCI) and round two of the Cali Coast Classic continue with even bigger stakes (hopefully).

2012 Week 10 Preview: Men's Soccer

UCSB needs a spark of life.  After being ranked in the top 10 for most of this season, their sloppy playing streaked has dropped them to No. 25.  That spark, could come tonight, on Senior Night, against Stanford.  In a quick non-conference game, UCSB has the chance to defeat a below-average Stanford team who's had some tough luck in conference play.  However, it's conference points that the Gauchos need...

On Saturday, Northridge, who is safely in first in the South, travels to UCR who are on the outside looking in for playoffs.  In the meantime, UCI looks to upset Fullerton so their name can be put in semi-final contention, while Cal Poly and Sacramento State duke it out for the coveted second North seed (both are in a tie for second with 13 points).  Finally, on Sunday, UCSB looks to strangle UC Davis' hold on the top spot in the North division.

Men's Soccer UCSB vs. Stanford 10/26

Men's Soccer UCSB vs. Stanford 10/26

In a very low stakes game UCSB put forth only a partial effort in what would be a 1-0 loss to Stanford. This is very understandable because UCSB is going to have a critical game in just two days when they play UC Davis. While the team may not have been pushing full force they did have some good looks at the box especially when Dion Acoff beat numerous defenders and slotted a rocket just wide of the post. With a bit of practice Dion could easily become one of the most dangerous players because of his ability to beat defenders and run extremely quickly. UCSB returns to action tomorrow as they will take on UC Davis in a match where we may see a drastic improvement in team play and effort. Returning starters (returning from injuries that is) are expected to play but everything is in the hands of the training administration. The boys will put in their best play on Sunday and serve many good minutes (and shots). Go Gauchos!

2012 Week 10 Preview: Women's Volleyball

Still a lot of matches left in the volleyball season, and while it is Hawaii's title to lose, LBSU can make a huge step going forward in stealing the title from the Wahine if they can win tonight on a regionally televised network.  Fox Sports Prime has picked up the match for tonight and there should be a lot of noise from the Walter Pyramid tonight.  However, that's not the only event this weekend:

Outside of the Wahine-49ers game, Northridge plays UCI in Irvine, Pacific travels to the Inland Empire to play UCR while UC Davis takes on Fullerton.  Finally, on Saturday, the stream of matches continue, with rivals Cal Poly and UCSB squaring off, Northridge plays LBSU, Hawaii takes on UCI, Pacific goes to Fullerton and UC Davis plays UCR.  If Hawaii sweeps this weekend, I don't foresee them losing the rest of the way, so it's the 49ers job to take care of business.

2012 Week 11 Preview: Women's Soccer

Early Friday post means that there is an early game.  With Cal Poly only picking up one point last week and also getting blown out by a surging Fullerton team, the Mustangs have to win this weekend to essentially be safe for the semi-final seeding.  With four teams within three points of each other, lets get to the action:

On Friday, fourth place Fullerton (15 points) takes on UC Davis, second place sharers UCI and Northridge, both with 16 points, square off for an extremely important match, Hawaii travels to the mainland to play LBSU (just outside of the semifinal spot with 12 points) and UCR plays Pacific.  A win by either UCI or Northridge would be devastating to the other team, this makes it our GAME OF THE WEEK.

On Sunday, simultaneous kickoffs will be in place as Northridge plays LBSU (which could also determine playoffs), Hawaii plays UCI, UCR travels to UC Davis, UCSB and Cal Poly square off and Fullerton plays Pacific.  It may take both playing days this weekend to determine playoffs, but that's what makes it exciting.

Week 10 Recap

I'm trying something new with the recaps today, so bear with me.

Men's Soccer:

And a last minute result (from Wednesday), Louisville assisted in continuing UCI's woes, with a 2-1 victory.

Women's Volleyball:
Cal Poly got into the winner's column this past weekend with 2 five-game wins over UCR and Fullerton.  Megan McConnell absolutely dominated the floor, with 23 kills.

On Friday, Fullerton beat UCSB in five, as did Cal Poly over UCR (as mentioned above).  On Saturday, Cal Poly continued the win parade with a five-game shocker over the Titans, LBSU swept UCI (while Winkler who's on watch, racked up 26 more digs to bring the magic number to 173), Northridge beat UC Davis three games to one, UCSB defeated UCR by the same score and Hawaii took five games to defeat Pacific.

Women's Soccer:
Big results came from last weekend in women's metric football, as the top four spots became crowded with all the teams within three points of each other.  On Friday, UCR shocked the Mustangs into a draw, giving the Highlanders their first conference points of the season.  Also on Friday, Northridge dominated Pacific 6-1, UCSB defeated Fullerton 4-2, and Hawaii beat UC Davis 3-2.  On Saturday, UCI defeated LBSU in double OT, 1-0.  Finally, on Sunday, Fullerton closed the gap with a 4-0 shackling of Cal Poly, Northridge continued their win streak beating UC Davis 1-0, UCR upset UCSB 1-0 and Hawaii beat Pacific 2-1.

No awards this week as I'm in a rush to get things out. Sorry!

UCSB Men's Soccer vs. Cal Poly (10/20)

UCSB Men's Soccer vs. Cal Poly (10/20)

In a sad turning point of the season UCSB lost to Cal Poly (2-1) at Harder Stadium in front of a record crowd after having a 1-0 lead. UCSB was simply outplayed and there isn't really much hope for an extended season now. Cal Poly played fairly well as usual while UCSB failed to come up big enough to stop them from scoring. Cal Poly found the back of the net three times in the match (the first time being offsides). UCSB could not finish many shots and thus eventually fell to Cal Poly. Does this mean Cal Poly is playing extremely well? probably not; does this mean UCSB is playing poorly? probably.

Here are some pictures of the crowds pouring in before the game for a total of 13,467 fans!:

2012 Week 9 Preview: Women's Volleyball

It's a short weekend for volleyball, as there are seven games.  Hawaii has a very comfortable lead in first place, and are also sitting at No. 9 in the nation, however, a three game lead isn't completely safe.  The Wahine play Pacific on Saturday in what should be considered the game of the week, as the Tigers sit at 16-4 on the season.

On Friday, Fullerton travels to the Central Coast to play UCSB as does UCR, who plays Cal Poly.  Finally, on Saturday, Fullerton plays Cal Poly, HATED RIVALS LBSU and UCI play each other, UC Davis travels south to play Northridge, UCR takes on UCSB, and the aforementioned game of the week features No. 9 Hawaii playing at home versus Pacific.

2012 Week 10 Preview: Women's Soccer

EVERYONE PANIC! Cal Poly is still undefeated in conference play.  Continuing their hot start, the Mustangs refused to be slowed down last week and will look to continue their undefeated streak.  LBSU got back into the winners column after a slow conference start, they now sit in third place threatening to take the top spot should Cal Poly fail to hold it.

Tonight, Cal Poly travels to Riverside to play the Highlanders, Pacific goes to Northridge, UCSB travels to Fullerton and UC Davis goes to the Islands to take on Hawaii.  On Saturday, HATED RIVALS UCI and LBSU play in what should be an entertaining game to make up for lack of games.  Finally, on Sunday, Cal Poly plays Fullerton, UC Davis plays Northridge, UCSB goes to UCR and Pacific travels to Hawaii.

2012 Week 9 Preview: Men's Soccer

ALL HAIL THE GREATEST COLLEGE SOCCER RIVALRY EVER! UCSB and Cal Poly square off on Fox Soccer Channel tonight in what's sure to be an epic matchup.  Both teams are tied for third place in the North (gasp!) but the Gauchos are sitting at No. 16 in the nation after a rebound win from a two-game losing streak.  Moshe's probably gearing up for the game and I wouldn't blame him (hence the reason for no preview?).  Expect an extremely large crowd, as last year's Classic drew nearly 25,000 fans between the two games.

About the OTHER games this weekend: Hate week continues as UC Davis takes on Sacramento State, Fullerton plays UCR and Northridge plays UCI.  If Sacramento State can beat the Aggies, they will take a dominating lead in the division with 16 points, however, a loss puts UC Davis in first.

Week 9 Recap

Note, recap will also include Wednesday and Thursday's game as I did not preview them.

Women's Volleyball:
Despite sweeping their matches last week and remaining undefeated in Big West Conference play, Hawaii dropped a spot in the national polls to No. 9 despite beating Northridge and UC Davis on Thursday.  UCI went 1-2 (win against UCR, losses against Fullerton and SDSU) over the weekend despite Kristin Winkler racking up more digs.  She now has 1974 digs, 199 away from the Big West record.

Last Thursday, LBSU defeated UCR and Fullerton beat UCI; on Friday, Pacific swept Cal Poly, UCSB beat UC Davis and Hawaii beat Northridge.  Saturday brought two more sweeps and two regular victories, as UC Davis broomed the Mustangs, UCI swept rivals UCR, Fullerton beat rivals LBSU and UCSB took Pacific to five games and won.  Early games this week included an Aztec sweep of UCI on Tuesday, a Northridge five game duel with Pacific, and a late night victory for Hawaii.

Men's Soccer:
Last Friday, Sacramento State drew Cal Poly after a double overtime battle.  On Saturday, UC Davis assisted in a 2 game losing streak for the Gauchos, beating them 1-0, followed by a UCI win over Fullerton and an overtime Northridge victory over UCR.  Earlier this week, Cal Poly took down UC Davis and UCSB got back in the winners column against Sac State on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, Fullerton won in a MACtion-style goalfest over Northridge 5-4 and UCR dominated UCI 4-1.

Women's Soccer:
On Friday, LBSU defeated UC Davis 1-0, Cal Poly and Northridge drew 2-2, UCSB beat Hawaii 1-0 and UCI beat Pacific 2-1.  Finally, on Saturday, Cal Poly dominated UC Davis 5-2, LBSU beat Pacific 2-0, Northridge defeated UCSB 1-0, UC Davis and UCI tied 1-1 and Fullerton beat UCR 1-0.

And now it's time for our weekly awards:

Big West Confidential Team of the WeekTeam(s), the Northridge-Fullerton goalfest! 9 goals overall in the match, one winner, all in regulation.  Plus, it's obvious that neither one of these goalies are getting a DPOW this week...
Big West Confidential Offensive Player of the Week: Fullerton's Ian Ramos for scoring a hat-trick in 17 minutes...that, sir, is Messi-style.
Big West Confidential Defensive Player of the Week: Kristin Winkler for a furious 77 digs over the weekend to bring her within 199 digs of the Big West record.

Awards in bold mean unanimous decision.

Men's Soccer UCSB vs. UC Davis

Men's Soccer UCSB vs. UC Davis

In what should have been a manageable match UCSB dropped a second game in a row (1-0). This is a very dangerous position to be put into and there aren't really any excuses for it. While Ema may have the talent and capabilities to play the game it should be noted that his position seems to change in every match. In addition to this, Sarle has quit the team by personal choice and is no longer available to help provide leadership. While Davis has not been exceptionally better than usual UCSB has been on a downward spiral since conference play has begun. This may be due to having such a weak schedule of preparation and it really shows. With Campion out of the games it's nearly impossible to get anyone to bury the shots and it's rather disappointing. Where are the skills which were so hyped up during those easy matchups in the preseason? Why is it that our best shots on frame are coming from defender Peter Mcglynn? It can be pushed on the fact that UCSB has four starters being injured but that's not really the case, the truth is that without those starters there isn't enough depth to win matches, there is just enough depth to put up a respectable fight and not lose by a margin of 3+. Hopefully the starters come back in soon and perhaps turn things around but things aren't looking too positive right now and there isn't much hope for an exceptional year (i.e. winning the NCAA tournament) but let this just be a taunt for whichever UCSB player is reading this as I hope they prove me wrong.

Men's Soccer Saturday Preview # 8 UCSB vs. UC Davis

Men's Soccer Saturday Preview # 8 UCSB vs. UC Davis

UCSB

UCSB is currently ranked #8 in the country. As if this weren't impressive enough they also have 5 players listed on Top Drawer Soccer's top 100 upperclassmen and perhaps the biggest statement is that UCSB is now the proud home of Top Drawer Soccer's #1 ranked freshman in the country, Ema Boateng! While Boateng may only have a tally of two goals in his first collegiate season (thus far) he had two of the most impressive goals seen in years. Ema bent a beautiful ball over the San Diego keeper in what would mimic the stylings of Beckham. Ema then dashed across 60 yards, outrunning UCLA's defenders (all of which had almost a foot on him) and slid the cross effortlessly around the goalie and let it roll slowly into the net as he scored the only goal UCSB would be able to against #6 UCLA. We can look forward to the likely return of midfielder Machael David and hope that Achille is fit enough to play against Cal Poly this coming Friday.

UC Davis

UC Davis( compiling a an impressive 3-1-0 record thus far in conference play) hopes to find the strategy to overcome what may be their most difficult opponent of the year. While UC Davis may only have a few individually ranked players they know that opinion pieces are not everything and that it only takes the ability to win in order to change foreign perceptions. UC Davis will not only garner a large point advantage over UCSB and Cal Poly in the event of an upset but they will also make the possibility for a run at the College Cup a very real one as they will be more securely positioned in the top two of the northern division.

Conclusion

This Saturday UCSB will take on unranked UC Davis. While UC Davis may be underwhelming on paper they are quite a worthy opponent. They have really picked up their play and found an effective communication which has allowed them to win the last three games in a row. UCSB, hoping to bounce back from its first loss of the season on Sunday will play with a swollen vein on their foreheads as they give it their all in order to avoid further complications on the road to the top.

2012 Week 8 Preview: Men's Soccer

NO MORE UNBEATENS! UCSB IS DOWN AND O--- no they're not.  Suffering one loss didn't kill the Gauchos as they remain ranked No. 8/11 in the nation.  On the other hand, Northridge was rewarded handsomely for knocking off a top 10 team, as No. RV (27)/21 in the nation.  Sacramento State is undefeated in conference play and UCI, who was ranked in preseason is 0-4 in conference play.  A quick word to UCR: DISCIPLINE!

Conference play continues on Friday, as Cal Poly looks to knock of Sacramento State.  On Saturday, UCSB travels to UCD, Fullerton squares off at UCI and UCR looks to get back to national prominence with a trip to Northridge.  Finally on Tuesday, UCD goes to Cal Poly and Sacramento State goes to UCSB for rare weeknight conference matchups.

2012 Week 8 Preview: Women's Volleyball

Oh hey, there you are Wahine! We thought you left us, but it was a silly dream.  Hawaii has now taken a dominant lead in the BWC standings and are rewarded with a No. 8 ranking in the nation as well as only one match this weekend.  Pacific while sitting at 3-2 in conference play, are 5-0 on the season.  UCR and Cal Poly need to get in the winners column in the conference, as both are sitting at 0-5.

Thursday night is semi-rivalry night as LBSU plays at UCR and rivals UCI and Fullerton meet.  Friday's games include Cal Poly travelling to Pacific, UCSB goes to UCD and Northridge travels to the islands for a late night match with Hawaii.  Finally, Hate Week finishes with three rivalry games and one regular conference game on Saturday: LBSU goes to Fullerton, Cal Poly plays at Davis, UCI goes to UCR and UCSB plays at Pacific.  What we can expect to see, is the middle of the pack shifting around in the standings after this weekend is over.
