Olympics Schedule 8/10/12

It is Day 14 of the 2012 Olympics, and as it gets closer to the final day, the number of events going on diminishes quickly.  Only one sport left that the Big West has any affiliation with: Men's Basketball.  They play at 9:00 AM in the Semifinals match versus Argentina.  The previous match between these two produced an eventual US blowout, though the first half was close.  Tony Ronzone is a staff member of the Olympic Men's Team, and so because of that, if the US wins a medal, he will not get one.  Stupid, I know, but there is still a lot of pride to be taken in that you were a member of the staff that put this group of medalists together and helped them get to where they are.

With that being said, here's your Olympic .gif of the day:

Recaps up through 8/7/12

There has been a lot that's happened with Big West athletes and coaches over the last few days and the fact of the matter is, I've been slow to cover them all.  So without further ado: the results of Big West Olympians/Coaches.

Women's Track and Field: Sharon Day - Heptathlon

Sharon Day finished the heptathlon at 16th position, which was exactly in the middle of everyone who finished (6 did not finish, and one did not start).  Her two best events were the 800 m run (where she finished 7th position) and the shot put (which she finished 9th position) whereas the Jump events (long and high) were her weakness, putting her in the position she was.  She finished up as the highest ranked American competitor, the next nearest American being Chantae McMillan, who finished 29th.

As a bonus:
Women's Track and Field: Stephanie Brown-Trafton - Discus throw

After finishing third in her group (and 6th overall) in qualifying, Brown-Trafton wasn't able to match her qualifying score of 64.89 m in the finals.  Her longest throw was in the first round of the final competition, a fairly long 63.01 m (or 206 ft and 8.5 in), good enough to put her in 8th and just under a full meter out of 6th.

Women's Track and Field: Kim Conley - 5000 m Qualifying

UCD coach Kim Conley faced a tough task to try and qualify for the 5000 m Final (taking place on August 10) and while she did finish 12th in her the qualifiers to keep her out, she did set a personal best time of 15:14.48.  Let's put this in perspective: 5000 meters is 5 kilometers, which is ~3.1 miles.  That's essentially a little over 5 minutes for a mile.  That, to me is ridiculous considering I'd be happy with a 9 minute mile.  Will we see her in the next Olympiad? Let's hope:
Men's Track and Field: Kenneth Medwood - 400 m Hurdles

The young flag-bearing Belizean, finished fourth in the qualifying round for the semifinal round.  Then in the semifinal, in Heat 2, the unthinkable happened.  Great Britain's Jack Green took a spill in the middle of the race, causing distraction and chaos on the track.  The final result for Medwood was a fifth place finish in the semis and a missed chance in the final.  If your thoughts go to the "woulda coulda" scenario, take them out and toss them in the garbage.  At 24, I'm fairly sure you can count on seeing Medwood in Rio at the next Olympics.

Men's Beach Volleyball: Rogers and Dalhausser are downed by Italy

The consecutive medal run dream is over.  Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser fell to the youthful team of Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo to a score of 21-17, 21-19.  The former Gaucho, nicknamed the Professor,   attacked 29 times with 11 successes and 13 digs.

Despite losing in the round of 16 to the young Italians, Rogers and Dalhausser can claim one thing that most people in the world don't have: A shiny gold medal in beach volleyball from the 2008 Olympics.

Olympic Schedule 8/2/12

Can you believe it? We're nearly one full week into the Olympics.  Traditionally, and it stays the same today, the Olympics were 16 days of athletic competitions.  During this time in ancient days, it was 16 days of peace where only the spirit of competition would be dominant.  Today, the Olympics tries to remain the same, as a spirit of peaceful competition.  Here are today's events:

Men's Water Polo: Ryan Bailey, Tim Hutten, Jeff Powers  - 10:20 AM vs Great Britain (12:20 PM NBC Delay)*

*As The Skip Shot showed us yesterday, NBC doesn't properly know how to broadcast water polo.  Good news is, men's water polo has free nipples for all that aren't blocked by the FCC.

Men's Indoor Volleyball: David Lee, Paul Lotman, David McKienzie, David Smith, Brian Thornton, Alan Knipe, Ron Larsen - Noon vs Brazil (2 PM NBC Delay)

Men's Beach Volleyball: Todd Rodgers/Phil Dalhausser - 1 PM vs Benes/Kubala (CZE) (Telemundo coverage 9 AM - 3 PM, 8 PM on NBC Delay)

Men's Basketball: Tony Ronzone (coach) - 2:15 PM vs Nigeria (Live on NBCSN)

The US dynamic duo of Beach Volleyball do it again

It's becoming a household name: the team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings have not missed a beat (or a match) in the last three Olympics.  In fact, until the Austrian sisters Schwaiger beat them in the first set of yesterday's match, Misty and Kerri had never lost a set until that point.  Yeah, go ahead, think that over. Three Olympics to this point, two set wins per match, three prelim matches (per each Olympics), two round-of-16's, two quarterfinal rounds, two semifinal rounds and two final rounds...math anyone?  That's 32 straight unbeaten sets until the Schwaiger sisters won the first set.

Quickly getting over that broken streak, May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings had no issue dismantling the Austrians after, winning 21-8 the second set and 15-10 in the third set to win their 17th straight Olympic match.  Can anyone stop these two?  Not if they have anything to say about it.

Big West Confidential Player Profile
Name: Misty May-Treanor
College: LBSU (1995-1999)
Kryptonite: Due to ruptured Achilles tendon during training session for show, had to leave "Dancing with the Stars"
Statistics: with partner as Kerri Walsh-Jennings, they had a 112 match winning streak. UN-STOP-PA-BLE
No seriously, can you really stop them? Probably not...
Next Match: Women's Beach Volleyball Quarterfinals

Amber Neben finishes strong, but misses out on medal

After a not-so-great appearance in the road race (finished 36th), Amber Neben finished her 2012 Olympic competition with a respectable 7th place in the individual time trials.  Her final time of 38:45.17 missed out of a medal by less than a minute.  If a minute seems like a lot, it's because although it is, the specific restrictions on time trial competitions make that number much closer in reality.  The closest she got was ranked 5th after the first split, but then time, quite literally got the best of her in the end.  Boise's own and Neben's teammate,
(though not Boise State's own) Kristin Armstrong defended her Beijing Gold with a second gold in the event this time around, becoming the oldest rider to win a gold in the sport.  Congratulations to both of these riders, and to team USA for another great showing in cycling.

Amber Neben places in top 40, misses out on medal hunt

The UCI graduate finished in 36th behind Kristin Armstrong.  Starting in 14th postition, Neben made her way up to 11th position.  She kept up that pace until the second half of the race, where she fell behind and finished 51 seconds behind the leader to finish the competition with an overall time of 3:36:20.

Something tells me her job's not done here...
