2012 Week 12 Preview: Women's Volleyball

Hawaii's clinched the Big West title, but these placement fights are to gain leverage in the Commissioner's Cup.  The even bigger story (possibly) is UCI's Kristin Winkler, who've we kept on record tracker, needs 79 more digs for the Big West record, with six more games left to do it.  Also, UCSB's Taylor Formico is on pace to finish the season, second in conference history for a single-season dig record.  With that being said, lets get to the games:

Tonight, Fullerton takes on the 49ers while UCR looks for their first conference win versus UCI and Hawaii hosts a non-conference game against BYU-Hawaii.  Tomorrow, the games continue as Pacific travels to UCSB and UC Davis plays Cal Poly.  Finally, on Saturday, a full slate of conference games line up, as Fullerton plays UCI, Northridge plays LMU in non-conference, Pacific takes on Cal Poly, UC Davis travels to UCSB and UCR goes to LBSU.

Week 11 Preview: Women's Volleyball

With Week 10 in the books and the final month of competition approaching for volleyball, the Big West title looks all but wrapped up for Hawaii.  The Wahine could in theory clinch the title at the end of this weekend if the chips fall right and they win both of their matches this weekend.  That being said, let's get to the games:

On Thursday, Northridge gets a home match against Cal Poly, while UCSB travels to the Islands to play Hawaii.  The Gaucho-Wahine game is important because a win for Hawaii puts the magic number to one for clinching the title.  On Friday, LBSU takes on Pacific, UCR gets a non-conference series in Bakersfield and UCI plays UC Davis.  Kristin Winkler has the counter set to 132 remaining before she gets the Big West digs record.   Finally, on Saturday, Cal Poly travels to Hawaii, where a Wahine win combined with a Gaucho loss, would give them the title.  Also on Saturday, LBSU plays UC Davis, UCI travels to Pacific, UCR goes to Fullerton and UCSB takes on Northridge.

2012 Week 10 Preview: Women's Volleyball

Still a lot of matches left in the volleyball season, and while it is Hawaii's title to lose, LBSU can make a huge step going forward in stealing the title from the Wahine if they can win tonight on a regionally televised network.  Fox Sports Prime has picked up the match for tonight and there should be a lot of noise from the Walter Pyramid tonight.  However, that's not the only event this weekend:

Outside of the Wahine-49ers game, Northridge plays UCI in Irvine, Pacific travels to the Inland Empire to play UCR while UC Davis takes on Fullerton.  Finally, on Saturday, the stream of matches continue, with rivals Cal Poly and UCSB squaring off, Northridge plays LBSU, Hawaii takes on UCI, Pacific goes to Fullerton and UC Davis plays UCR.  If Hawaii sweeps this weekend, I don't foresee them losing the rest of the way, so it's the 49ers job to take care of business.

Week 10 Recap

I'm trying something new with the recaps today, so bear with me.

Men's Soccer:

And a last minute result (from Wednesday), Louisville assisted in continuing UCI's woes, with a 2-1 victory.

Women's Volleyball:
Cal Poly got into the winner's column this past weekend with 2 five-game wins over UCR and Fullerton.  Megan McConnell absolutely dominated the floor, with 23 kills.

On Friday, Fullerton beat UCSB in five, as did Cal Poly over UCR (as mentioned above).  On Saturday, Cal Poly continued the win parade with a five-game shocker over the Titans, LBSU swept UCI (while Winkler who's on watch, racked up 26 more digs to bring the magic number to 173), Northridge beat UC Davis three games to one, UCSB defeated UCR by the same score and Hawaii took five games to defeat Pacific.

Women's Soccer:
Big results came from last weekend in women's metric football, as the top four spots became crowded with all the teams within three points of each other.  On Friday, UCR shocked the Mustangs into a draw, giving the Highlanders their first conference points of the season.  Also on Friday, Northridge dominated Pacific 6-1, UCSB defeated Fullerton 4-2, and Hawaii beat UC Davis 3-2.  On Saturday, UCI defeated LBSU in double OT, 1-0.  Finally, on Sunday, Fullerton closed the gap with a 4-0 shackling of Cal Poly, Northridge continued their win streak beating UC Davis 1-0, UCR upset UCSB 1-0 and Hawaii beat Pacific 2-1.

No awards this week as I'm in a rush to get things out. Sorry!

2012 Week 9 Preview: Women's Volleyball

It's a short weekend for volleyball, as there are seven games.  Hawaii has a very comfortable lead in first place, and are also sitting at No. 9 in the nation, however, a three game lead isn't completely safe.  The Wahine play Pacific on Saturday in what should be considered the game of the week, as the Tigers sit at 16-4 on the season.

On Friday, Fullerton travels to the Central Coast to play UCSB as does UCR, who plays Cal Poly.  Finally, on Saturday, Fullerton plays Cal Poly, HATED RIVALS LBSU and UCI play each other, UC Davis travels south to play Northridge, UCR takes on UCSB, and the aforementioned game of the week features No. 9 Hawaii playing at home versus Pacific.

Week 9 Recap

Note, recap will also include Wednesday and Thursday's game as I did not preview them.

Women's Volleyball:
Despite sweeping their matches last week and remaining undefeated in Big West Conference play, Hawaii dropped a spot in the national polls to No. 9 despite beating Northridge and UC Davis on Thursday.  UCI went 1-2 (win against UCR, losses against Fullerton and SDSU) over the weekend despite Kristin Winkler racking up more digs.  She now has 1974 digs, 199 away from the Big West record.

Last Thursday, LBSU defeated UCR and Fullerton beat UCI; on Friday, Pacific swept Cal Poly, UCSB beat UC Davis and Hawaii beat Northridge.  Saturday brought two more sweeps and two regular victories, as UC Davis broomed the Mustangs, UCI swept rivals UCR, Fullerton beat rivals LBSU and UCSB took Pacific to five games and won.  Early games this week included an Aztec sweep of UCI on Tuesday, a Northridge five game duel with Pacific, and a late night victory for Hawaii.

Men's Soccer:
Last Friday, Sacramento State drew Cal Poly after a double overtime battle.  On Saturday, UC Davis assisted in a 2 game losing streak for the Gauchos, beating them 1-0, followed by a UCI win over Fullerton and an overtime Northridge victory over UCR.  Earlier this week, Cal Poly took down UC Davis and UCSB got back in the winners column against Sac State on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, Fullerton won in a MACtion-style goalfest over Northridge 5-4 and UCR dominated UCI 4-1.

Women's Soccer:
On Friday, LBSU defeated UC Davis 1-0, Cal Poly and Northridge drew 2-2, UCSB beat Hawaii 1-0 and UCI beat Pacific 2-1.  Finally, on Saturday, Cal Poly dominated UC Davis 5-2, LBSU beat Pacific 2-0, Northridge defeated UCSB 1-0, UC Davis and UCI tied 1-1 and Fullerton beat UCR 1-0.

And now it's time for our weekly awards:

Big West Confidential Team of the WeekTeam(s), the Northridge-Fullerton goalfest! 9 goals overall in the match, one winner, all in regulation.  Plus, it's obvious that neither one of these goalies are getting a DPOW this week...
Big West Confidential Offensive Player of the Week: Fullerton's Ian Ramos for scoring a hat-trick in 17 minutes...that, sir, is Messi-style.
Big West Confidential Defensive Player of the Week: Kristin Winkler for a furious 77 digs over the weekend to bring her within 199 digs of the Big West record.

Awards in bold mean unanimous decision.

2012 Week 8 Preview: Women's Volleyball

Oh hey, there you are Wahine! We thought you left us, but it was a silly dream.  Hawaii has now taken a dominant lead in the BWC standings and are rewarded with a No. 8 ranking in the nation as well as only one match this weekend.  Pacific while sitting at 3-2 in conference play, are 5-0 on the season.  UCR and Cal Poly need to get in the winners column in the conference, as both are sitting at 0-5.

Thursday night is semi-rivalry night as LBSU plays at UCR and rivals UCI and Fullerton meet.  Friday's games include Cal Poly travelling to Pacific, UCSB goes to UCD and Northridge travels to the islands for a late night match with Hawaii.  Finally, Hate Week finishes with three rivalry games and one regular conference game on Saturday: LBSU goes to Fullerton, Cal Poly plays at Davis, UCI goes to UCR and UCSB plays at Pacific.  What we can expect to see, is the middle of the pack shifting around in the standings after this weekend is over.

2012 Week 6 Preview: Women's Volleyball

Now that conference play has started, there are a lot less games to go over, especially since I recapped Tuesdays games (for lack of getting a preview done then). Tonight, LBSU takes on Northridge, hopefully to continue their hot start, while Hawaii hosts UCI in a late match.  Tomorrow, Fullerton travels to Pacific to take on the Tigers while UCR goes to Davis.  Finally, on Saturday, Fullerton goes to UCD, UCR travels to Pacific, UCI flies back to the mainland to play Northridge, UCSB plays their rivalry game versus Cal Poly and LBSU goes to the islands to play Hawaii.

The two players to watch this week are UCI's Kristin Winkler who's on Big West Record Watch, and Hawaii's Emily Hartong who leads the league in kills.  Winkler currently sits fourth in the record book, needing 340 digs to capture the record outright, while Hartong just dominates, averaging 4.13 kills.

2012 Week 6 Results

Today's results are going to include Tuesday's volleyball matches since I didn't have time to do a preview until this afternoon.  So lets get started:

Women's Volleyball:
If you missed the awesome match that was No. 8 Hawaii vs Cal State Northridge, then shame on you.  Northridge kept it not only close, but was leading the fifth set.  Hawaii tied it up and then took 4 match points to finally pull out the win.  After that, both teams took care of UCR.  On Friday, LBSU beat Cal Poly three sets to one, Northridge beat Fullerton 3-1, Hawaii swept UCR and UCI beat UCSB 3-1.  On Saturday, UCI swept Cal Poly, Northridge beat UCR in five sets, UCD won against Pacific, LBSU swept UCSB and Hawaii took five sets to knock off Fullerton.  Finally, on Tuesday, Pacific swept SJSU in their last conference match, and Bakersfield defeated Cal Poly in five sets.

Here are the standings:
W L Pct. W L Pct.
Hawaii 3 0 1 10 2 0.833
Long Beach State 2 0 1 7 6 0.538
UC Irvine 2 0 1 7 8 0.467
UC Davis 1 0 1 7 7 0.5
Cal State Northridge 2 1 0.667 11 4 0.733
Pacific 0 1 0 12 2 0.857
UC Santa Barbara 0 2 0 7 9 0.438
Cal State Fullerton 0 2 0 6 9 0.4
UC Riverside 0 2 0 5 10 0.333
Cal Poly 0 2 0 1 13 0.071

Men's Soccer:
Call me crazy, but the Big West is looking good going into conference play, with two teams ranked, UCSB and UCR who meet this week (y'all should look at the preview our newest author gave for the game).  Onto the results: on Thursday, Fullerton dominated Air Force 2-0, while Northridge put up another five spot, this time on San Diego.  Friday was okay, as Gonzaga beat UCI, UCLA tied UCSB in a battle of ranked teams and Cal Poly beat Harvard.  On Saturday, Saint Mary's beat UCD and Northridge put up another multiple goal shutout, beating Air Force.  Finally, on Sunday, Oregon State beat UCI, UCSB beat Harvard, Sacramento State pulled out the win over UNLV in overtime, UCLA beat Cal Poly, Fullerton beat San Diego and UCR lost their first game of the year against Cal State Bakersfield.

Standings are below:
North
W L T Pts. W L T Pct.
UC Santa Barbara 0 0 0 0 6 0 2 0.875
Cal Poly 0 0 0 0 5 3 0 0.625
UC Davis 0 0 0 0 2 3 4 0.444
Sacramento State 0 0 0 0 3 4 1 0.438
South
W L T Pts. W L T Pct.
UC Riverside 0 0 0 0 7 1 0 0.875
Cal State Northridge 0 0 0 0 6 3 0 0.667
Cal State Fullerton 0 0 0 0 4 6 0 0.4
UC Irvine 0 0 0 0 3 5 1 0.389

Women's Soccer:
LBSU finished up this week with another tally in the "win" category and were rewarded with a No. 21 ranking in the NSCAA Polls.  The rest of the conference is split fairly evenly above and below .500, and that  parity looks to grow with conference play beginning this week.  Here are last week's final scores:  Pacific beat St. Mary's in double overtime on Thursday.  On Friday, Pepperdine beat UCSB, UCD blew out Lamar 4-0, UCR lost to New Mexico, future conference mates SDSU beat UCI, LBSU defeated San Diego and Santa Clara beat Northridge in overtime.  Finally, on Sunday, UCR beat Lamar 2-1, New Mexico beat UCD, Pacific defeated Arizona, SDSU continued its Big West rampage, beating UCSB, Fresno State beat Cal Poly and San Diego defeated Northridge.  Pre-conference standings are below:

W L T Pts. W L T Pct.
Long Beach State 0 0 0 0 7 3 0 0.7
Hawaii 0 0 0 0 5 3 2 0.6
UC Davis 0 0 0 0 5 4 1 0.55
UC Riverside 0 0 0 0 5 4 2 0.545
Cal State Northridge 0 0 0 0 3 3 3 0.5
Cal Poly 0 0 0 0 3 5 1 0.389
UC Irvine 0 0 0 0 4 7 0 0.363
UC Santa Barbara 0 0 0 0 3 6 1 0.35
Cal State Fullerton 0 0 0 0 3 6 0 0.333
Pacific 0 0 0 0 3 6 0 0.333

Now it's time for everyone's favorite part (okay, so just mine...), the Big West Confidential Weekly Awards:

Big West Confidential Team of the Week: UCSB for staying undefeated
Big West Confidential Offensive Player of the Week: Brandon:  LBSU womens volleyball Alma Serna had 27 kills in two matches over Cal Poly and UCSB
Chris: I'm giving it to Sagi Lev-Ari (Northridge) for continuing his hot goal-scoring streak.  Lev-Ari totaled three more this past weekend.
Big West Confidential Defensive Player of the Week: LBSU women's soccer Marrina Meyers had six saves and her third shutout of the season over San Diego.

Awards in bold mean unanimous decision.
