The sixth ranked Hawaii Rainbow Wahine lose to the 25th ranked California Bears in five 25-23, 16-25, 20-25, 25-17,15-12.
A little under 6,000 watched the Wahine fall to 5-1 while the Bears improve to 2-3 in the season.
Hitting errors was the killer for the Wahine as they hit in the negatives in game four and overall they were .173. It was a match of momentum and in the end Cal had it for set four and five. The Wahine seemed out of sync in those two sets. Hawaii was down 10-5 in set five when they came back to make it close. It was 14-10 and the Wahine strung up some points to make it 14-12 only to lose on a high bump overpass by Nikki Gombar that landed on the Hawaii side of the court with two Hawaii players not reacting to the ball.
Emily Hartong led the team again in kills with 18. She also had 14 digs and 5 blocks. Jane Croson had 17 kills, 16 digs and 4 blocks. Kalei Adolpho had 9 kills, 6 digs and 8 blocks.
For the Bears it was balanced. Christina Higgins and Adrienne Gehan both had 13 kills. Kat Brown had 7 blocks for Cal.
Hawaii will have their final tournament at home with the Verizon Volleyball Challenge next week Sept. 7-9 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
They will play San Diego State on Friday, Idaho on Saturday and third ranked UCLA on Sunday.
